App Development

On Wednesday 25th November, More Able year 7 students were invited to spend the morning learning how to make mobile phone Apps using AppShed. Students were invited as they all achieved at least a 5C in English and Maths at Key Stage 2. This criteria, set by Ofsted, identifies the students who are involved in the More Able programme at Selby High School, whereby they receive additional support, mentoring and opportunities to stretch and challenge them.

Students spent time discussing their potential, their dreams and the goals they needed to set themselves in order to achieve their full potential. They were then given a brief – to create a mobile app suitable for Selby High School students to keep them entertained during the festive period. Students had to use prior knowledge, some support from Year 10 mentors and their own creativity to create Apps suitable for this brief. There were a huge range of ideas from games, to advent calendars, Christmas sing along lyrics, videos and countdown clocks.

Expertly judged by Mr Morton and Mr Martin, the top 3 teams were announced.

3rd place – Holly Pownall, Izzy Sturmey and Ella Parsonage

2nd place -  Taylor Whitehead and Leah Liddle

1st place – Georgia O’Leary Ward and Charlotte Pilling

Students took home certificates and novelty USB prizes for their effort and hard work. Huge thanks to the Year 10 mentors (Lidia Kierat, Louise Harper, Holly Lee, Charlotte Pennington and Abi Beckram) for supporting students during the day.
