Hannah Berzins elected as North Yorkshire Member of Youth Parliament

The winners were announced at County Hall and were attended by Julia Mulligan – the Police and Crime Commissioner, parents and youth support service staff. We are delighted to announce that Hannah Berzins has been elected as one of six North Yorkshire Members of Youth Parliament (MYPs).  These young people are elected annually in every part of the UK. There are currently 300 MYPs.  The UK Youth Parliament is run by young people and it provides opportunities for 11-18 year-olds to use their voice in creative ways to bring about social change.

Once elected MYPs meet with MPs and local councillors, organise events, run campaigns, make speeches, hold debates and ensure the views of young people are listened to by decision makers.

The most important aspect of Hannah’s MYP’s role is to make sure she represents the views of the young people in her constituency.  Over the next year Hannah will be giving her support to the “Curriculum for Life” campaign.  This campaign believes that citizenship education and PSHE in the curriculum should be radically overhauled through a youth-led UK-wide review.

Hannah stated that “it is an honour to have the opportunity to represent and give voice to the young people of the Selby area”.  In November Hannah will be attending a televised debate in the Houses of Parliament, an event she is really looking forward to attending.  She hopes she will be given the opportunity to speak and represent the views of the young people of Selby.

It is always fantastic to see a student such as Hannah become engaged with the community and politics.  It is particularly pleasing to see young people become involved constructively in shaping the world.  We are all really proud of the fact that Hannah has been elected and that she will have the chance to represent young people from Selby at regional and national levels.  We wish her well in her new role, we all know that she will do an excellent job.
