School Trip to the Moon!

The Science Department at Selby High School are inviting students, parents, carers & guardians to take part in a school trip to THE MOON!

You might be thinking we have lost our marbles… wait until you hear the price of the trip… it is going to cost just £1 per person…

We propose to join in the Kickstarter crowdfunding campaign and support the incredibly exciting and ambitious Lunar Mission One project. We are aiming to be able to send a memory box to the Moon which will contain photographs and information about Selby High School and also the names of everybody who has contributed. The memory box will be deposited at the bottom of a shaft drilled into the surface of the Moon – your virtual trip to the Moon will be complete (sorry, but it is a one way ticket!).

This UK project is an important piece of scientific research which aims to send an unmanned robotic probe to the South Pole of the Moon – an area unexplored by previous missions – by 2024. The probe will drill down at least 20m and enable scientists to study lunar rock dating back 4.5 billion years. The mission will improve scientific understanding of the early solar system, the formation of the Earth and the conditions that initiated life on Earth. The project will also stimulate interest in Space, create jobs and lead to technological developments.

If we manage to raise £600 then we will be able to enter a draw to win a prize to name the lunar landing module. Selby High School will also gain access to lots of updates and information, which we will do our best to share with all in our community.
