Selby High School welcomes visitors from Zambia

On Friday morning Selby High School raised the Zambian flag on one of the “Golden Jubilee commemorative” flag poles at the school to welcome visitors from Zambia.  The visit has been arranged through Global Partnerships, an initiative forged between schools in the UK and Zambia in Central Africa.  The initiative is part of the ‘Connecting Classrooms’ project funded by the British Council. In February representatives from four Selby Schools visited Limulunga Basic School (linked with Selby High School), Mupatu Basic School (linked with Hambleton Primary), Mukoko Basic School (linked with Cawood Primary School) and Malengwa Basic School (linked with North Duffield Primary School). This week’s reciprocal visit is aimed at fostering children’s understanding of different countries and cultures whilst promoting their rights and responsibilities.

During this week there are eight teachers visiting from eight link schools in Zambia, they will be observing British teaching methods and the resources available here in the UK and what they can adapt and take back to Zambia with them.  The enthusiasm for teaching was really apparent, even on the first day after the very long day travelling, when the visiting teachers became involved in the dance classes at Selby High School.

As well as visiting and spending time in all the linked schools, the Zambian visitors will also be visiting Whitby via the Pickering to Whitby Steam Train to get a taste of the British Seaside and Yorkshire Fish & Chips, spending a day in York seeing the sights and doing a bit of shopping, a trip to Selby Abbey and they will be experiencing a Ceilidh at an event planned for them next Friday.
