Year 10 does Speed Networking with Industry

The Speed Networking with Industry event took place on Thursday 4th December 2014 at Selby High School.  All Year 10 students were taken off timetable to take part, with half of the year group participating in the morning and the other half in the afternoon session.

Working with NYBEP to organise the day, the school welcomed employers and education providers from 15 different organisations which included, Profiles Health and Fitness Centre, Animals In-Tuition, BT, Askham Bryan College, Doosan Babcock, University of Law, North Yorkshire Police, North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, Inchpunch Design and Communication, Army, York St John University, University of York, North Yorkshire County Council, Barclays Bank, Selby College and Armonia Health and Beauty Academy.

The employers were invited into school to talk to our students about the range of different jobs in their organisations, potential career opportunities and feed into the preparation for Work Experience in the summer of this academic year, which every student in Year 10 will undertake.  Working in small groups students had around six minutes to obtain as much information as possible from each of our visitors.  The level of participation and engagement from our students was fantastic, asking some probing and well thought out questions, their behaviour and how they represented the school was equally impeccable.

It was amazing to watch the students so involved and interacting well with the employers. It’s very important to hold days like this to allow the students to talk to people in industry and be able to chat and ask questions about the world of work and what is expected from them once they step into their chosen careers after they leave education. It also allows the employers to talk to the students about what’s happening in industry as well as meet the future workforce.

With both students and employers alike thoroughly enjoying the day and giving some fantastic feedback the day was a huge success and enormously valuable for everyone who took part.

A huge thank you to all our visitors for giving up their time to take part in the event and we look forward to welcoming them back in the near future.
